Clever Miniature Accessories: Suggestions

An Addition that can make a Big Difference

Everyone likes to tweak there dollhouses from time to time. There are some great things that you can add to your house, and I just simply came across one that helped out a lot. I simply created a floor board to use for the trim around the floor of the dollhouse. The discovery is not entirely new, or my own, there are many places to get doll trim, but I found the cheapest is a very thin flat balsa wood. Simply paint it the color of your dollhouse and attach it to the foot of your walls. I was most impressed to not see any more tiny cracks between the wall and the flooring due to the trim covering it up. The wallpaper walls were also trimmed and I was really happy to see that it prevented fraying due to covering the edges. It was a little addition that was fun to install and really added to the look of my dollhouse.

Using Size to your Benefit for Design

When setting up your dollhouse and buying furniture you will need to remember the three sizing constraints. The first one is the scale of the furniture, second is the size of the room, and third is the relative size of the furniture as it compares to other pieces of furniture. The first is the miniature scale, and you could really lose some money buying the wrong size. Meaning, look up the miniature size of your dollhouse kit, if it is one inch scale then you need to buy one inch furniture Size element is the second point, and this is as simple as making sure that your furniture will actually fit in the room. Make sure that you measure your furniture room and are aware of the dimensions of the furniture that you buy. Lastly, the final point is the size of the furniture as it compares to other pieces around it. Smaller pieces will get less attention than other pieces, and the larger pieces should be the ones that you want everyone to look at.

Choosing the Right Style Can Help Your Design

When you first started this adventure of making, building, or designing your dollhouse, did you know what style you wanted it to be? Each piece of furniture will belong to a certain room, but you must also realize that each room should connect with each other. This is creating a styling theme. Victorian, Modern, and Traditional, though they are not the only choices, are the major players with dollhouse manufacturers - let?s look at each one. If you are more of a romantic you will choose the Victorian theme, because it resembles a tasteful past, fluid curves, and astounding furniture pieces. If you want to stand out or go with a more up to date style, Modern design will give you simplicity, technology, and some great straight lined pieces. The last is the traditional or classical style which will give you a standard look ? Nothing to fancy or distinct of any era, but useful in filling your dollhouse.

Adding a Mood

Designers might know about lighting, and colors, but only the great ones design for mood. The mood of the room is chosen by the expectations of those that do, or plan to use it. A great example is a play room where the sole purpose of the room is to have fun and enjoy oneself. A bedroom would have a personal setting to illustrate the mood of that individual and help them feel comfortable. Just as houses are dictated by mood, a great dollhouse should as well. Visualize what mood you would like to portray in your rooms, for what purposes would they have that room and what particular mood would they set. When you tap into the mood you will know it, and the design of the room will just fall in place as if it was meant to be there all along.
